SplinterBike : Wooden bicycle to set world speed record

If one talks about riding a wooden bicycle then it may sound to you as awkward as a square wheel but a British craftsman has not only manufactured a working wooden bicycle model but also claims to set a land speed record with this. Michael Thompson, the craftsman started working on this model last year.

The bicycle, named Splinterbike is made up of hardwoods and plywood and model is weighing around 31 kg (approx. 68 lbs). There have been wooden bikes before including Audi Duo, the most popular among them. But none of them featuring no plastic, rubber or metal at all. This is the first such model and the designer claims to set a land speed record with it.

You can imagine how tough it would be to design a chain the bike needed to have a high gear to theoretically reach speeds of over 30 miles per hour (48 kmph). Eliminating all such huddles, Thompson managed to build a working model with 128-tooth gear cog connecting the pedals to the rear hub.

The intention of the designer is to break a speed record with this creation, but whoever will test it should be aware of the fact that the SplinterBike has got no brakes. After knowing such facts, would you like to buy this one-gear bike?
